Our Preliminary task was a way of practicing camera work and angles and i feel that i haven't put so much effort into it. However, Continuity editing really helped as i gained more understanding of the concept and it did give me time to practice editing using Adobe Premiere.
I have also learned about the following shots:
Shot reverse shot- this shot was used when the two people had a conversation.
180 degree rule- in this rule, the two charcters in the shot must have the same direction relationship (lef/right)
Match on action- This is a continuity editing shot which should show someone doing the one thing such as reaching out to open a door, in the next shot would be from the inside of the room where the door opens and he comes in.
If i could go back and do my preliminary task, i would plan a more difficult concept so i put in a lot of thought into it and practice filming from different angles more throughrly.

Production Company Logo
The logo of a production company in a film lets the audience know who produced the film. The purpose of the logo is to show the audience who the production is by and is almost like a signature.
We used Adobe Illustrator to create the logo. We found an image of a hand and enterd text on it. The name of the comnpany is simple and easy to remember; "Red Hand"

The above is our logo. The Production is called Red Hand Productions which we decided is an independent film production company. The reason for this is basically because of our genre. Most Social Realism films are made by low budget independent companies.
When the audience see this logo on different films, they would know what kind of film it is.

Filming
Our filming was fairly simple and easy. All we had to do was drive around Leicester and film while we were driving. It took longer than we expected because we didn't find what we were hoping to see.
1 pm: we got to Leicester and we drove around filming. It was quiet early so there wasn't any people around to be in our shots.
3 pm: still driving around looking for more deprived areas and people. We have found some good footage however, the battery died on one of our 2 cameras.
4 pm: We made some calls to people who lived in Leicester to give us name of areas we could visit.
5pm: After we ate, we made our way home to Coventry

Treatment
For our opening sequence, we brain stormed ideas and from looking at other films of our chosen genre, we realised that we needed to set the scene and make our genre clear.
Our treatment is based on a girl around the age of 18 who has come into England. We do not see the girl however, we can see what she sees. The girl is in a car being driven to a location, during this drive, she looks around the old, urban deprived streets. She stares at people who stare back at her as if she doesn't belong here.
During the 2minuet opening sequence there will be classical music playing throughout as the titles appear. We have chosen classical music because it is a complet contrast to the scene so it gives it more drama and realistic atmosphere.

Research; Social Realism
What is Social Realism?
Social realism is a film genre that focuses on narratives which challenge today's contemporary social issues. The purpose of this genre is to intellect the audience and raise awareness of what is happening in their society. The audience often relate to social realism which makes this genre very popular in the film industry.
What does Socio-Realism Focus on?
This genre often focuses on modern alive issues such as the following:
- Political issues,
- Social class,
- Culture,
- Race,
- Prostitution
- Sexuality
- Drugs
History of Socio-Realism in Britain; Time Line
Rescued by Rover 1905:
The first noticed social realism film was “Rescued by Rover.” the plot of the film is about a nurse looking after a baby whilst a beggar begs the nurse to aid her. The nurse refuses and the beggar snatches the sleeping baby whilst the nurse is distracted by a soldier.
Receiving aid during time was very hard. As there were wars and political issues, lower classed people were unable to receive medical attention they could afford and were a low priority in the community. This often led to lower social class people taking drastic measures such as stealing medication.
The Happy Breed 1944:
This film is based on the status of women in high social class after World War 1. Although women were set to do men jobs during the world war while the men were in the battle. After this everything went back to normal and women were set to be just housewives.
Room at the Top 1959:
This film is based on an ambitious man who has moved to another city working at a poorly paid job. The young man falls in love with an older, unhappily married women but she ends up falling in love with him. After the married women has had a quarrel with her husband, the young man seduces her. The film goes on to show people drinking to avoid their feelings, making drunken passes at the wrong people and being attacked by gangs.
Kes 1965:
The film focuses on a young boy who has little hope in life and is destined to become a coal miner and is bullied both at home, by his physically and verbally abusive half-brother, as well as at school. He is mischievous himself; he steals milk from milk floats, gets other students into trouble and generally fights and misbehaves. Billy comes over as an emotionally neglected boy with little self-respect. Billy's mother refers to him in the film as a "hopeless case". His father is dead.
This film shows the emotional damage caused to an abused child through their behaviour.
Secrets and Lies 1996:
The film tells the story of a successful black optometrist who is adopted. She chooses to trace her family history and discovers that her birth mother is a working class white woman.
The film shows social realism through race. A mother had to give up her daughter because she was black and racial mix was highly forbidden during the time. However, the young black women is very successful which contrasts black people at the time.
Kidulthood 2006:
This film focuses on a group of 15 year olds from a rough area of London. The film shows gangs and bullying. This is portrayed as a serious social realism issues as a young white girl commits suicide after being attacked and bullied by a group of girls from school.
The film shows that teenagers and gangs cause serious issues in society as they are stereotyped today in reality.
Fish Tank 2009:
This film is based on a 15 year old girl who has just moved home with her abusive mother and foul mouthed sister. The girl is a 'loner' and has no friends. Her only escape from her life is through hip hop dance which she practices alone in a deserted home. She meets a young man who is sympathetic towards her.
The film represents social issues through the young girl by the way a young vulnerable girl is taken advantage of by a man.

Preliminary Task
Our aim within this task was to gain understanding of camera shots and techniques. To do this, we had to make a short sequence showing clear continuous editing.

Ideas & Genre
Genre
As a group, we decided to look at different genres that we could use and how we could ensure that the audience can tell what this genre is by the openning title sequence. We decided that our genre will be Social Realism so we went on to discuss our openning sequence ideas.
Ideas
We looked at this website to gain knowledge of what opening title sequence look like http://www.artofthetitle.com/. We found that opening title sequence have titles which include names of actors, directors and producers. We also found that there is the name and logo of the production/distribution companies.
As a group, we decided that we liked the idea of Social Realism so we decided to look at films of this genre and look at similar elements they have. This would give us ideas of how we could include these elements into our own opening sequence.
